1997 : The Baguette bag, so named because of its longish, narrow shape (which fits snugly under the arm like a loaf of bread), debuts for fall. It will become one of the best-selling and most-copied accessories of all time. Hundreds of thousands of the often highly decorated bags, described by fashion critic Marion Hume as “Beanie Babies for grown-ups,” will be sold. Frida Giannini—later creative director of Gucci—is in the Fendi design stable at the time, but, as she later tells WWD, “I cannot claim its maternity!” Credit belongs to Silvia Venturini Fendi.
